The Gentry’s moved back to Indianapolis from Denver, Colorado.  Eager to be coming home, they looked extensively for a house to fit their needs.  We had visited 2 other homes with them thinking they were going to be the ones selected.  Finally, as the saying goes, the third time was a charm.  This house had all of the space they were looking for, but they just couldn’t come to terms with the kitchen.

So, we were asked to complete a fairly unusual task.  Use the exact same cabinet footprint from the previous kitchen lay-out, but make it feel completely different.  They wanted to minimize the impact on the existing hardwood floors since there was no extra flooring for our use.  This higher priced home had a previous kitchen that just didn’t fit the price point of the house.  So, the fact that we were working primarily with design and installation of cabinets, countertops, backsplash, plumbing fixtures and light fixtures gave us a few liberties in terms of dollars to make this a very nice space with the budget of the client.  This project was fun because it was all about the details!  Complicated, but fun.

Everything began with the island because it had to fit in the exact same floor dimensions where the hardwood was originally installed to the previous island.  For such a large house, there actually wasn’t a lot of kitchen space, so we jazzed up with island by playing with countertop heights and we incorporated the microwave into the island space.

The focal point of the kitchen was the range hood area with the inclusion of a slate tile backsplash.  Obscured glass was added to the cabinets flanking the range hood area and small details such as the small vertical wine rack in the upper cabinet run served to create a visual detail, as well as lending balance to the kitchen design.

The compliment of a fantastic granite selection to the beautiful cherry cabinets the client selected really makes the kitchen a fabulous space.  While we did remodeling work in several other areas of the house, including the master bathroom, a hall bathroom, laundry room and basement, the kitchen and the adjacent living room fireplace built-ins with the slate around the new fireplace unit were the focal points of this project.  The Gentry’s love the changes in this fantastic home!
