Like most homes
built in the 1970’s, this Carmel-area home had a cut-up, compartmental feel to
it. The existing kitchen and eating area was situated in between a half-bath
and the laundry room. As was typical during that period, the view from the
kitchen to the eating area was obstructed by wall cabinets hung above a
peninsula.
The homeowner’s
had gotten a taste of a more open floor plan a few years ago when Gettum
Associates turned a formal living room and a family room into a great room. The
goal of this project was the same: To open up the spaces and provide more room
for entertainment.
The solution to
the problem, developed through our award-winning design process, was to remove
all the partition walls within the area to create a continuous traffic pattern
from the garage entry all the way through to the family room. To further
accentuate the open feel, the walls between the family room and kitchen and
kitchen and dining room were modified to arched half-walls to define the
separate spaces, but keep with the “open” theme.
The new kitchen
features Cherry cabinetry with an “Arts-an-crafts” feel and beautiful granite
countertops. The large island not only includes bar seating, but also has a
prep sink and roll-out trash can. Pre-finished, engineered oak hardwood flooring
and travertine backsplash tile accent the rich cabinetry. All new stainless
steel appliances complete the updated look.
The needs of the
homeowner were met. There is no need to move, when you can improve!
